She will be discussing best practices for community-wide implementation of ACEs initiatives and trauma informed care which have been transformative in the state of Washington. \n\n\n \n\n\n \nSpeakers\n \nDr. Robert Anda is the co-author of the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences study\, one of the largest investigations into in the effects of childhood abuse and neglect on the adults those children become. \nSee Dr. Robert Anda's full bio \nDr. Robert Anda\nDr. Robert (Rob) Anda graduated from Rush Medical College in 1979 and received his board certification in internal medicine in 1982. In 1984 he completed a fellowship in preventive medicine at the University of Wisconsin\, received a Masters Degree in epidemiology\, and was accepted into the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. He conducted research in disease surveillance\, behavioral health\, mental health and disease\, cardiovascular disease\, psychosocial origins of health-risk behaviors\, and childhood determinants of health. \nIn the early 1990’s\, Rob began a collaboration with Dr. Vincent Felitti at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego to investigate child abuse as an underlying cause of medical\, social\, and public health problems. This effort lead to a large-scale study funded by the CDC to track the effects of childhood trauma on health throughout the lifespan. They called it the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACE Study). Rob played a principal role in the design of the study\, and serves as its co-principal investigator and co-founder. \nData collected from more than 17\,000 patients clearly showed that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)\, were common; that they had a profound negative effect on health and well-being; and were a prime determinant of the past\, current and future health behaviors\, social problems\, disease incidence\, and early death in the study population. These findings have resulted in more than 70 publications in major medical and public health journals. The ideas from this work are now influencing the design of similar research around the world. \nFindings from the ACE Study have been presented at Congressional Briefings and numerous conferences around the world.  The ACE Study is being replicated in numerous countries by the World Health Organization (WHO)\, and is in use to assess the childhood origins of health and social problems in more than 18 U.S. states. \nRob continues to work as a CDC senior scientific consultant in Atlanta\, but his time is increasingly devoted to traveling the nation to consult and speak with leaders in public health\, medicine\, corrections\, judicial and social service systems and with local\, state\, national\, and international organizations about the ACE Study. He is showing how its findings are useful to inform programs\, policy\, and legislation to prevent disease and disability. \nRob is the author of more than 200 publications\, including numerous government publications\, and book chapters\, and has received numerous awards and recognition for scientific achievements. He has appeared in national newspapers and television networks and is frequently invited to speak about the ACE Study and his experiences around the country working on applications of ACE Study concepts. \nJust as in his work\, Rob is passionate about gardening and scuba diving\, when his schedule permits.  He also enjoys fishing and golf.  He makes his home in Fayetteville\, GA. \n\n \n\n \n \nMs. Laura Porter\, co-founder of ACE Interface\, LLC along with Dr. Anda\, will share insights from more than a decade of leading successful state-wide implementation of ACEs concepts. \nSee Ms. Laura Porter's full bio \nMs. Laura Porter\nLaura Porter is Co-Founder of ACE Interface\, LLC.   With Dr. Robert Anda\, Ms. Porter develops and disseminates educational products and empowerment strategies that help leaders throughout the nation to dramatically improve population health.  She is honored to be a thought partner\, educator\, consultant and coach in two dozen states.  Ms. Porter provides support and services to a wide range of groups… from parents leading informal initiatives to officials leading state and federal agencies.  \nLaura Porter brings to ACE Interface more than a decade of experience leading successful state-wide implementation of ACE Study concepts.  Her expertise includes overseeing analysis and dissemination of surveillance and archival data to support decision making\, and designing and facilitating processes demonstrated to improve population health\, safety and productivity.  Laura is committed to developing market forces in the ACE social movement sufficient to sustain the courageous leaders who are using ACE and resilience science and Building Self-Healing Communities. \nMs. Porter concurrently serves as the Senior Director of The Learning Institute at the Foundation for Healthy Generations\, a Seattle-based non-profit.  There she oversees analysis of Washington State ACE data and works with local and state leaders to embed NEAR science findings into policy\, practice and community norms.  (NEAR: Neuroscience\, Epigenetics\, ACE and Resilience) \nAs an Associate with the Southwest and Central offices of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT)\, Ms. Porter helps CAPT and its grantees to integrate powerful findings from the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences Study into prevention planning\, practice\, and evaluation.  The CAPT is a national substance abuse prevention training and technical assistance (T/TA) system dedicated to strengthening prevention systems and the nation’s behavioral health workforce. \nVideo clip related to her work with CAPT. \nFrom 1998 to 2013\, Laura Porter directed the Washington State Family Policy Council and Office of ACE Partnerships.  In these roles\, she worked with Senators and Representatives from the four caucuses of the Washington Legislature\, five members of the Governor’s Cabinet\, managers from seven state agencies\, directors and members of 53 community-based collaborative organizations and leaders from ten Tribes.  Laura and her colleagues developed a unique model for improving the capacity of communities to deliver stunning results for a small investment.  Communities using the model have documented rEducations in the rates of seven major social problems and Adverse Childhood Experience scores among young adults.  Cost savings from caseload rEducations attributable to the Family Policy Council in child welfare\, juvenile justice and public medical costs associated with births to teen mothers were estimated by an independent economist to exceed $55m/biennium. \nPrior to her work with the State of Washington\, Laura Porter served as an elected County Commissioner.  Commissioner Porter designed a service-oriented approach to water quality assurance that secured family wage jobs in the shellfish industry.  She also led an inter-jurisdictional criminal justice initiative that implemented prevention\, facilities and system improvements.   Working cooperatively with over a dozen unions and guilds\, Commissioner Porter ended a multi-year pattern of grievances and strikes\, thus assuring uninterrupted county services to businesses and residents.  In 1991\, Commissioner Porter authored a public transportation plan which won voter approval and created the Mason County Transportation Authority.  During her tenure as a founding member of the Board of Directors\, Mason Transit became the first transit system in the state with all routes and services fully ADA accessible.  Commissioner Porter served on the Washington Counties Risk Pool Board of Directors (liability)\, the Washington Counties Insurance Fund Board of Directors (health)\, and the Washington State Association of Counties Legislative Steering Committee. \nLaura is mother to three children and grandmother to three precious grandchildren. \n\n\n\n SUMMARY:Resilience Showing
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with The Music Hall. “The child may not remember\, but the body remembers.” RESILIENCE is a documentary by James Redford that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression\, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior. However\, as experts and practitioners profiled in the film are proving\, what’s predictable is preventable. These physicians\, educators\, social workers\, and communities are daring to talk about the effects of divorce\, abuse\, and neglect. And they’re using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease. \nPost-film Q&A with Kennebunk Police Chief Bob Mackenzie\, Somersworth High School Principal John Shea\, Substance Abuse Therapist Jennifer Stout\, and moderated by Pinetree Institute Founder and Executive Director Larry McCullough. \nPurchase tickets here: \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Endangered Species
DESCRIPTION:Each year Pinetree Institute showcases interactive performances meant to engage audiences in a shared learning experience tackling social and cultural issues together. \nFor 2013\, we are sponsoring a performance of dance works by Larry McCullough entitled “Endangered Species.” The dances in this series explore the themes of beauty\, fragility\, loss and hope in moods ranging from serious to humorous. \n“Endangered Species” is an evening of solo dance works created and performed by Larry McCullough. The dances cover a wide range of moods from serious to humorous with an underlying exploration of deep emotional experience. Each dance touches on themes of beauty\, fragility\, loss and hope in ways that relate deeply to the emotional challenges of creating meaningful and sustainable lives. The performance is approximately 90 minutes with one 15-minute intermission and includes the following pieces: \n“Mystic Butterflies” to music of Rachmaninoff \n“Lost to the World” to music of Mahler \n“Wings” to music of Chopin \n“Endangered Species” to music of Debussy and Poulenc \n  \nLarry McCullough began his dance training in the men’s dance program at New Trier High School in Winnetka\, Illinois\, studying with the principal male dancer of the Sibyl Shearer Company\, one of the leading modern dance companies of the early modern era. He continued his dance study at Oberlin College and U.Mass Amherst\, eventually moving to New York where he studied ballet at the Joffrey school and modern dance at the Graham and Ailey schools. \nIn New York he met legendary Canadian dancer Judy Jarvis\, one of the last protégés of the great German dancer Mary Wigman. Together they established a small dance-theater group in Toronto called the Performing Arts Circle which focused on the integration of arts\, theater and expressive dance. During this time Larry taught dance in several Canadian Universities and the company toured Canada and Europe. One of the highlights of these tours was the opportunity to perform in West Berlin and to be one of the last groups of dancers to be coached by Mary Wigman before her passing. \nAfter leaving Canada Larry continued his arts work by pursuing a doctoral program at U.Mass Amherst in Human Development that included a focus on the arts as an integrative approach to development. He also broadened this work to include a more general behavioral sciences approach to organizational development which became a large part of his career focus. \nIn the mid-1990s Larry discovered several strands of dance and movement work that have heavily influenced his current dance creation and performance. One is the work of Isadora Duncan whose technique and works have been faithfully preserved\, restored and taught by Lori Belilove\, Founder and Artistic Director\, and Cherlyn Smith\, Associate Artistic Director\, of the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Another is the work of Kazuo Ohno and the Japanese dance form of Butoh. Larry was profoundly moved by this work and inspired by seeing Kazuo Ohno perform beautifully moving dance works at age 94. A third influence is the practice of Authentic Movement which takes a deeply personal approach to moving that taps into a deep emotional core of experience. It is interesting to note that both Butoh and Authentic Movement have roots in the expressive dance technique and philosophy developed and taught by Mary Wigman. \nEach of these strands of work has stimulated a new range of creative interests and exploration in Larry’s continuing explorations in movement and dance. More recently the global crisis around the need for protecting and conserving our environment has stimulated thought and work around some of the deep issues of beauty\, fragility\, loss and hope which are themes that are explored in the set of dance pieces being showcased in the new series entitled “Endangered Species.”
